What should be out for Open Studio?

organized

chaos

  • Paint Wall: Same thing applies, if the paper is not destructed from a previous class, leave it up. 2-3 colors of paints and 2-3 brushes of different sizes.

  • Collage station: Use the brown tubs. These are in the back labeled "Open Studio”. PLEASE try and keep these organized and only put them back in the “Clean” section when they are refilled. Please keep these OFF the counters.

  • Drawing station: Cut white paper that is under the counter into halves. Set out: colored pencils, markers, paint markers, pens, and crayons. For the paint markers, these dry out quickly and are the relatively pricier. Please cap these as you see them uncapped.

  • Large and Short table: This can be covered with a sheet or a sheet of craft paper. Put out either watercolors with water cups and paper or 2-3 colors of regular paint and thin paint brushes. You can add oil pastels as optional.

What do I say when they get to open studio?

Are you here for open studio? Great! Open studio is our open hours time, so it's a little different than a typical class. We have a paint station, drawing station, collage station, and our pretend play station and they have a full hour to make as much art as they want. The only thing we ask is that you not touch what’s on the counters, as we have things separated out for other classes and events. Guide them to the back and get them set up with an apron. I'll be back to check on y'all periodically.

FAQs

  • If it is something simple like scissors, you can get it out. However, if it’s something like “can I get airdry clay out” or “can we get out this thing I saw that you had in classes?”…No. The things that we have in classes are reserved for classes so we can justify the price difference.

  • Parents cannot leave the studio during open studio. One parent can be in the front if another is in the back, but there should always be a parent with eyes on their child.

  • I usually give a 5 minute warning and a 5 minute grace period. About 5 minutes before their time is about to end, let them know. You can queue this up with "what do you guys have going on the rest of the day?" or “you all have about 5 minutes left! You’re welcome to add on another hour for $10. Let me know!”.

  • Every 20 mins or so bounce back and check on supplies. If something needs to be organized or refilled, do that. Other than that, there is a list for every open studio shift on Asana.

  • Look at the next class on the schedule. If the next class on the schedule is open studio, then you can organize all of the materials, put fresh ones out, and reset the room to the “start”.

If the class is NOT open studio, please put everything away. If your Asana tells you to set up for the next class, please do. If there isn’t anyone in the Open Studio 15 minutes to close time, please set up for the next class.

  • Yes, but let them know they have 30 minutes left and it will still be $17.
